Ocean City Police helping beach guards on ATVs this summer (2)

People who enjoyed Ocean City’s beaches over last Memorial Day weekend may have noticed a different type of city employee riding around on ATVs typically reserved for Beach Patrol staff.

According to an Ocean City Police Department Facebook post, officers will be out every day this summer cutting through the sand on the four-wheel all-terrain vehicles to help with lost children and separated parties, and enforce local ordinances that prohibit activities such as smoking and alcohol consumption on the beach.

According to cityordinances, smoking of any kind is prohibited in all public spaces across the resort, including the beach, Boardwalk and dunes, except for in designated smoking areas. Anyone who violates the rule is subject to a $500 fine.

Public alcohol consumption is also not allowed, including on any street, avenue, alley, sidewalk, beach, parking lot or vehicle in the designated areas. Possession of an open container of any alcoholic beverage in public is also prohibited. Anyone who is caught and cited for having an open alcohol container in any of the prohibited areas faces up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

The OCPD’s Facebook post said the goal in assigning officers to ATV patrol is to keep the beach safe and family friendly.
